Brakes

Brakes are the one system on your car where putting the job off never saves money. A worn pad costs a set of pads. The same pad left for another two months eats the disc behind it, and now it costs pads and discs. Leave it longer again and the caliper seizes. Every stage of that doubles the bill, and none of it is the customer's fault — nobody is given a warning until the noise starts.

Most people arrive here because the car started making a noise, not because a service schedule told them to. So here is what the common symptoms usually mean.

The commonest cause is the wear indicator doing its job: a small metal tab on the pad, deliberately positioned to touch the disc and make a noise when the friction material gets low. It is designed to annoy you. A squeal can also be surface rust after a wet night, or dust and glazing, which is why a squeak that disappears after the first few stops is usually nothing.

This one is not a warning any more. Grinding is normally the pad backing plate against the disc, with the friction material already gone. Braking distance is longer than you think it is, and the disc is being destroyed while you drive. Stop using the car and ring us.

Usually a disc that has run out of true. Everyone calls it a warped disc, though the cause is more often uneven pad material deposited on the disc face than genuine distortion. Felt through the steering wheel it is normally the front discs; felt through the seat or the pedal, the rear.

Air or moisture in the fluid, a failing master cylinder, or a leak somewhere in the system. A pedal that slowly sinks while you sit at a red light is a master cylinder until proven otherwise. This is not a "book it in next week" fault.

Typically one caliper doing less work than the other, often a sticking slider pin. It also produces a hot wheel and a smell after a long run.

There is no mileage figure that is true for every car, and any garage that gives you one is guessing. Pad life depends on where you drive far more than how far you drive.

Rear pads generally last one and a half to two times as long as the fronts on a conventional car, because most of the braking effort happens at the front. On many newer cars with an electronic parking brake the rears wear faster than they used to, because the system uses them more.

The measurement that actually matters: a new pad has roughly 10–12 mm of friction material. At 3 mm it wants replacing. Below 1.5 mm it is legally worn out and the disc is at risk. We measure it at every service and every health check, and we tell you the figure rather than the verdict — so you can decide whether to do it now or at the next visit.

"We checked your brakes" is not a finding, it is a sentence. Here is what is actually measured and written down, on every car that comes in for brakes or for a service:

• Pad thickness, front and rear, in millimetres — not "fine" or "getting low", the number, so you can compare it next time

• Disc thickness against the manufacturer's minimum, and the depth of the lip on the outer edge, which is what decides whether discs can stay when pads are changed

• Disc surface condition — scoring, corrosion, and uneven pad deposits, the last of which is what judder usually turns out to be

• Brake fluid level and the condition of the fluid, along with the date of the last change if the record shows one

• Flexible hoses and rigid pipes, looked at along their full length, because corrosion on a pipe is invisible until somebody looks underneath

• Caliper slider pins and piston movement, which is where a car that pulls under braking or a hot wheel almost always starts

• Handbrake travel, or the electronic parking brake's own readings taken from the car's control unit

You get the figures, not the verdict. What you do with them is your decision, and there is no obligation to book the work on the day.

Real numbers, not "contact us for a quote".

Every figure above is a starting price, not a fixed one, and the honest reason is the parts. Pads and discs for a family hatchback and for a large four-wheel-drive with 380 mm discs are not the same money, and no amount of goodwill makes them the same.

The exact number is the one we give you after we have looked at the car, and it moves in both directions. If the discs turn out to be within their minimum thickness and the pads can go on their own, that comes off the quote. If a slider pin has seized or a flexible hose has perished, that gets added. What does not change is the labour, and what does not change is that nothing is added to or taken off the job without a phone call first — you get the figure before we start, not on the invoice afterwards.

If we find something else while the wheels are off, whether a corroded pipe, a torn flexible hose or a wheel bearing that has been quietly getting worse, we stop and call you. Nothing gets done, and nothing gets charged for, until you have said yes.

Simply put — brake fluid is the only fluid in your car with a shelf life measured in years rather than miles, and it is the one almost nobody replaces on time.

It is hygroscopic. That means it pulls moisture out of the air, through the flexible hoses and past the seals, at a few per cent a year. Dry DOT 4 boils at around 230°C. The same fluid with 3% water in it boils at around 155°C. On an ordinary drive that difference is invisible. Come down a long hill on the brakes, or drive a car hard for ten minutes, and the water boils, the vapour compresses where the fluid would not, and the pedal goes to the floor. That is the failure mode, and it happens exactly when you need the brakes most.

Manufacturers ask for a change every two years on most cars. It costs £49.95 here. We would rather tell you that than sell you something bigger.

Electronic parking brakes. The lever has been replaced by a switch and two motors on the rear calipers. To change rear pads, the calipers have to be electronically wound back into service mode and re-calibrated afterwards. Do it by force and you destroy the actuator, which is not a cheap mistake. We hold the manufacturers' own software — ODIS and VCDS for VW, Audi, Skoda and SEAT, ISTA for BMW and Mini, XENTRY for Mercedes-Benz, Pathfinder for Land Rover and Jaguar, Techstream for Toyota and Lexus — plus Snap-on, Launch, Bosch, Autocom and Autologic for multi-brand work.

Brake wear sensors and service resets. Many cars monitor pad wear electrically and log the service interval in the car's own systems. Fitting new pads without resetting that leaves a warning on the dash and a wrong record in the car's history. It is a two-minute job with the right tool and impossible without it.

Regenerative braking on hybrids. A hybrid recovers energy through the motor and uses the friction brakes far less, so pads last a long time. The discs corrode instead, because they never get hot enough to clean themselves. It is very common to replace discs on a hybrid with plenty of pad left. We work on the ordinary systems of hybrid cars, brakes included; we do not currently take on high-voltage battery work.

Every brake repair we carry out is guaranteed for a minimum of 12 months or 12,000 miles, parts and labour.

We also fit parts we are willing to put our name to. Brakes are the last place on a car to save eight pounds on a set of pads. Cheap friction material fades when it gets hot, and the moment you need it most is the moment it is hottest.

So the short version. A squeal that clears after the first few stops is usually nothing. A squeal that stays is the wear indicator, and that is a booking this month, not this year. Judder through the pedal is discs, and it will not settle on its own. Grinding is not a warning any more and the car should not be driven. A pedal that sinks at a red light is the one to ring about today rather than tomorrow.
